Are you trying to lose weight? We’re often told losing weight is a simple equation – burn more calories than you consume. While technically I suppose this is true, I think most would agree it’s not quite that simple. One difficulty is trying to determine how many calories you burn. After all, it’s nice that the treadmill tells me how many calories I’ve burned while running, but what about the rest of the day? What about those days when I don’t exercise at the gym, but I’m doing errands…or just taking a day off and relaxing? Truly knowing your metabolic rate is critical to reaching your goals and can help take the guesswork out of weight loss. But unfortunately this number has been next to impossible to determine…until now.
Vital Choice Healthstore now offers the BodyGem Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test. The BodyGem is a state-of-the-art, handheld device that accurately measures resting metabolic rate, the number of calories you burn to maintain vital body functions, including respiration, heart rate, body temperature, and blood pressure. In other words, if you did nothing but lay still and breathe all day, your RMR is the amount of calories your body would burn. The test takes less than 10 minutes and is conducted by our registered dietitian Nicole Gould, RD, LD.
Once resting metabolic rate is determined, other factors such as age, height, weight and activity level are factored in to determine the total amount of calories your body burns on an average day. Based on these factors, Nicole can develop your unique daily calorie budget including protein, carbs and fat to help you reach your personal weight loss goal.
