We’ve all heard the saying, “Let your food be your medicine…” and when it comes to fatty fish like wild salmon this is certainly the case. According to research, the essential fatty acids (most notably Omega-3) from wild salmon provide numerous benefits to your heart including reducing triglycerides and plaque formation, modulating inflammation, lowering blood pressure and increasing HDL (good cholesterol).
However, fish may not be the most effective food for reducing LDL (bad) cholesterol. Fortunately, Mother Nature has cooked up a few other heart healthy foods that have recently been a-buzz thanks to Dr. Oz and others - artichoke and hibiscus.
While both artichoke and hibiscus (often consumed as a tea) provide numerous heart health benefits, one they share is the ability to reduce the body’s production of cholesterol. According to various studies, they accomplish this by inhibiting an enzyme in the body responsible for making cholesterol called HMG-CoA reductase. What’s really interesting to me is that this is how most of the statin medicines work too. But unlike medications, neither artichoke nor hibiscus has ever shown to have any negative side effects.
